Fitz and the Tantrums, Paper Tongues, The '59 Sound, Chase the Sun, Chris Wollard and the Ship Thieves, Lyrics Born, Fink, Black Joe and the Honeybears, Richard Swift, The Drums, King Khan and The Shrines.... I've been on an eclectic tear lately trying to fill my head with as many new artists as possible that pull influence from Blues, R n'B, Psychedelia, Surf Rock and Folk... I've also got a slight obsession right now with the Phenomenal Handclap Band, Edward Sharp & The Magentic Zeros as well as the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the new Black Keys releases ... There's a whole lot of interesting new music out there right now. I'll try to post more band names when I have time.

Peter Makebish is a wonderful soul who I've had the pleasure of knowing for many years now. We've seen each other grow through many phases and somehow have both managed to reach a point in life where calmness is a prelude to igniting a thunderous creative future as men. His abilities as a composer were posted on the web today. When I was a kid I remember packing horses deep in to the rocky mountains... One afternoon sitting high up on a mountain valley we'd made camp but had the chance to take the horses for a quick sprint before we called it a day. Even now I can recall the touch of the mountain air turning cold as my horse galloped beneath me, it's speed accentuating the severity of our environment; heightening the extremity of the cold air grazing my face as we speed across the meadows surrounded by snow capped peaks... There's an adrenaline rush that comes with those experiences that is without peer, especially living in a city like New York where the energy flux of so many people can hold you frozen solid at times hoping your heart doesn't lose it's own sense of rhythm amongst all the other pounding "noise" of humanity swirling around... Listening to Peter's latest remix with John Wolfington reminded me of that moment on horseback knifing like an arrow through the air, free, purposeful, silent of mind, at peace and completely in union with the horse I was riding. Unforgettable. Like the razors edge of calm that always exists before a storm strikes (that unique calm that blankets the atmosphere a moment before the full power of a storm punches it's way though the sky). Something in the aural space of Peter's composition reminds me of that identifying element in the air before a squall rips through the everything. Listening to the track, for a brief moment in time I'm back on top of the galloping horse of my youth, ignited, alive and feeling the cold touch of the wind tattooing its signature on to my face... Check out the posting on Nowness - It's definitely got a vibe - calm and extreme - two opposites that share so much with each other.

To give you an even greater context to this article (I think one of Bono's best), Gilles Peress was in Derry that day in Northern Ireland photographing the events when the British troops opened fire -- Gilles was a young photojournalist at the time, in coincidence we had a really insightful conversation last weekend about this event at his house in Brooklyn about an American Indian Shaman that was at a Sunday Bloody Sunday healing gathering many years later.... reading this article provides an amazing backdrop to the consciousness of standing up for what's right and believing in the ability that the distinctive elements of grace and healing are possible when truth is present...

Home Made High Altitude Camera

A cinematographer in Oxnard, CA, built a homemade high-altitude camera using a weather balloon with two second-hand digital cameras he bought on Ebay (for only $45) that captured beautiful video images from 24 miles above the Earth's surface.

DIY-tinkerer Colin Rich built his device using styrofoam and duct-tape to prevent the cameras from freezing at temperatures below -50F (aka 1002 uses now for duct-tape!).

The balloon eventually burst at around 125,000 feet, which triggered a parachute to deploy, allowing the device to float safely down to land in Santa Paula, 15 miles away from where it was originally launched.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is holding a symposium called "Is Photography Over?" -- an account about it was posted on Foto8 -- I took a blurb from the article

I like anything done in motion that pushes the capabilities of a camera forward. What I post on this site is intended to lead people to new ideas, new camera techniques, interesting pieces of art or simply a path to competitions and opportunities for exhibitions that they would not normally discover. With the advent of motion and video capabilities in the latest 35mm cameras there are ways to shoot and capture things beyond my wildest imagination. Lately a lot of these camera manufacturers show videos by a select few photographers (many of whom produce very mediocre pieces). I encourage anyone who reads this blog to search beyond what those people are doing ("don't believe their hype") and discover the underground of a new generation of talent who are doing things that are experimental, exciting and very fresh.

8 weeks ago when I was in Cape Town my friends showed me the work of "Die Antwoord" -- we had a good laugh and loved it for all of it's music video clichés and how it turned rap and the conjunctive tongue of Afrikaans on it's ear. Now it's somewhat of a global phenomenon. On the back of this they just signed to Interscope records. In the age of digital viral social memes... this is one more notation in the path to new global media phenomenons... These are how the latest sensations are made and as Ninja, the lead member/rapper of Die Antwoord ("The Answer" in English) says: "Become the Enemy" when advising Jimmy Iovine of Interscope on how to overtake what the Internet has done to the record industry. "The Cove" wins best documentary Academy Award

Photographer Louie Psihoyos wins the Oscar for the documentary he directed on the slaughtering of Dolphins in Japan. At the Academy Awards he was interrupted in his ability to give thanks to all the people that helped him make the film (the speech was cut off early by the network). Luckily backstage he got a few extra seconds to pay heed to a few of the key friends, family and co-workers who contributed to the film.

Here's an excerpt of the speech we were not able to see:

"We made this film to give the oceans a voice.

We told the story of The Cove because we witnessed a crime. Not just a crime against nature, but a crime against humanity.

We made this movie because through plundering, pollution and acidification from burning fossil fuels, ALL ocean life is in peril from the great whales to plankton which incidentally is responsible for half the oxygen in this theater.

Louie Psihoyo's - a good friend and mentor is nominated for an Academy Award this year for best Documentary Feature -- it's Louie's first feature length film as a director and a very passionate project for him. It's quite a huge effort and the team around him of both friends and cohorts is truly an exceptional group of people. A few years ago I shot this image of Louie after rising up from a dive in the Tahitian Islands. A calm and peaceful moment as we waited together to be plucked from the ocean after our last dive of the trip... Good luck this Sunday Louie -- you are inspiration to us all.

Hasselblad today announced the ten winners of its prestigious 2009 Masters Awards, one for each of ten categories: architecture, editorial, fashion/beauty, fine art, general photography, nature/landscape, portrait, wedding/social and up-and-coming artist. Given in recognition of his or her contribution to the art of photography, Masters Awards are judged on photographic ability in the areas of creativity, composition, conceptual strength and technical skill. The Boombox is Back

Lately my Boombox imagery has been receiving a lot of attention. The Omaha World-Herald published an article about these pictures (and a blurb on my forth-coming book about the cultural impact of Boomboxes on the late 70's and early 80's youth movement). Part of my personal collection of Boxes is currently on display until May 23/2010 at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Phoenix Arizona for the show: Rewind Remix Replay: Design, Music & Everyday Experience
